REVIEW: Ultraviolence by Lana Del Rey

Although I know that this review is almost a year too late, I thought it would be interesting to post.

As a really big Lana fan, I will try to be as fair as possible…

Ultraviolence has got to be one of my favourite albums for 2014. Lana stayed true to her autobiographical writing style, while almost completely changing it up by creating a more woozy, ‘narco-swing’ kinda vibe… which it true to form, only problem is it isn’t the road trip music, Born to Die and The Paradise Edition, provided us with. It’s the kind of album you listen to while drinking Whiskey neat and pondering your life and relationships.

Lana Del Rey tells stories and paints pictures with her strong, visual and mysterious tales of love and lust, with the hint of intense relationships. Relationships of which seem (as per usual) filled with older men, drugs and abuse. Her use of metaphors and really great English though gives us all hope for future generations – if you asked me.

Apart from making me cry, I think the whole album was on point from a creative stand point, I also LOVED the fact that Lana used the word ‘fuck’ several times, on various songs, throughout the album.

While I loved some of the songs, I can’t say the same for every single one of them… so these are my favourites, to least favourite list:

  • Sad Girl
  • Pretty When You Cry
  • Fucked My Way To The Top
  • Ultraviolence
  • Money Power Glory
  • Cruel World
  • Old Money
  • West Coast
  • Brooklyn Baby
  • The Other Woman
  • Shades Of Cool

Each song has a life, and vibrancy of it’s own, and as usually it’s well written.

So, in conclusion, I think this one is a gem but not an every day kinda album, enjoy and happy listening…

Who is excited for the new album, Honeymoon? I know I am, even though Lana has called it ‘noir-ish’ … how bad can it be?
